Rising fuel costs and a crumbling economy are driving growth in reliance on bikes for transportation and to make a living. Unfortunately many of the people who need bikes the most still find one out of reach. The volunteer-based Bike Kitchen has been working to change this for five years.
The Bike Kitchen provides tools, expert assistance, and a wealth of salvaged bike parts for a yearly membership of $40-$80, or a day use fee of $5. The ‘Earn a Bike Program’ is set up for members who cannot afford to pay the membership fee. With the Earn a Bike Program anyone can volunteer for 6 hours to earn a membership and the right to put together a working bike from the salvaged parts. After helping out the community for five years the Bike Kitchen has grown too large for it’s current location and needs your help.
The Bike Kitchen will move from its current, 1,000 square-foot location on Laskie Alley in Soma in January, to a mixed-income and mixed use housing development at 18th and Alabama.
The Bike Kitchen needs help from the community to make its move. The new location will provide increased storage space, more professional-quality bike stands, and an additional set of tools. While the space has been secured, the Kitchen’s new location still needs a bathroom, electrical wiring, and internal walls. To make this happen the bike kitchen still needs to raise $50,000 to reach its goal of $100,000.
To reach it’s goal the Bike Kitchen needs your help. Financial contributions can be made at via PayPal. Also come out to the Bike Kitchen’s five year anniversary fundraiser.
